Jimmer Fredette and BYU survived a thrilling reminder that March Madness is back.
Fredette scored 37 points, including two 3-pointers in double overtime, to seal the Cougars’ 99-92 win over 10th-seeded Florida on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Fredette, the nation’s 12th-leading scorer, made a 3 from the top of the key to put seventh-seeded BYU (30-5) ahead 90-83 with 2:42 left, then added another deep shot with just over a minute remaining to put the game away.
Michael Loyd Jr. added a career-high 26 points, pushing BYU to a lead it would hold until a late second-half rally by Florida. Loyd scored all the Cougars’ points in the first overtime.
Kenny Boynton scored 27 points for Florida (21-13), helping to rally the Gators from a 13-point second-half deficit in their first NCAA tournament game since back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007.

Congressman Adam Putnam is savoring some fine Louisiana root beer, thanks to the football prowess of his alma mater.
Putnam, whose district includes parts of the Plant City area, made a friendly wager with Louisiana congressman Steve Scalise based on the outcome of the Oct. 10 University of Florida-Louisiana State University football game.
The Gators, led by quarterback Tim Tebow, won 13-3 at LSU’s infamous Tiger Stadium, nicknamed Death Valley.
Putnam, a UF graduate, and Scalise, an LSU grad, each wagered a product of their respective districts on the outcome of the big game. Putnam bet Florida’s Natural orange juice against root beer produced by the Abita Brewing Co. of Louisiana.

How much are a Heisman Trophy, two national championships and the adoration of a legion of Florida Gator fans worth? About $2 million.
Gators quarterback Tim Tebow disclosed at SEC Media Days on Thursday he has taken out roughly $2 million worth of insurance policies, Florida Today reported. The senior quarterback told Florida Today he didn’t even consider buying the insurance until head coach Urban Meyer stepped in. Tebow’s policies are in case of injuries — a practice allowed under NCAA regulations. Usually, the premiums on the policies are not paid until after the players sign an NFL contract.
