Miami wide receiver Leonard Hankerson is returning for his senior season, and defensive lineman Allen Bailey says he’s leaning toward coming back as well.
Hankerson was Miami’s leading receiver this season with 45 catches for 801 yards and six touchdowns. He revealed his 2010 plans after Miami lost to Wisconsin 20-14 in Tuesday night’s Champs Sports Bowl.
Bailey said he’s “almost” sure he’ll be back, but will confer with people close to him before making a final decision.
Orlando Franklin, who’s expected to be Miami’s starting left tackle next season, also said he plans on returning for his final season.

Typically, graduation day represents the end of someone’s term as a college athlete.
Not for Miami linemen Joe Joseph and Matt Pipho. They were just getting started.
Already with their degrees in hand, the fifth-year seniors are finally having breakout seasons for the ninth-ranked Hurricanes (4-1). Joseph leads the defensive line with five tackles for losses, a career-best 3 1/2 of those coming in last week’s win over Florida A&M. And Pipho, who never was first-string as an undergrad, has started all five games at right tackle.
For a young Miami team, with half of the two-deep either freshmen or sophomores, a couple old guys are holding their own.

National championship possibilities in 2005. A four-game winning streak in 2006. Hopes of returning to the Top 25 in 2007. An opportunity to clinch a trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference title game in 2008.
No team has been a bigger thorn in the Hurricanes’ side in recent years than the Yellow Jackets, who’ve won four straight in the series, including a 41-23, it-wasn’t-that-close romp a year ago, a beating that knocked Miami from the ACC race and sparked what became a season-ending three-game slide.
The 20th-ranked Hurricanes (1-0, 1-0) will get another chance to atone tonight, when the 14th-ranked Jackets (2-0, 1-0) visit in Miami’s home opener and a game that will likely loom vital in the Coastal Division.

Jacory Harris stood motionless on the Miami sideline with five seconds remaining, silently pleading for one more stop. He had done his part. And after one last review, so did Miami’s defense.
Ailing arm and all, Harris threw for 386 yards — including a 40-yard pass over double coverage to Travis Benjamin that set up Graig Cooper’s 3-yard touchdown run with 1:53 left — and led the Hurricanes past No. 18 Florida State 38-34 in a wild, back-and-forth game on Monday night.
“I was just thinking my team fought through this so long and so hard. All the preparation and it came down to this,” Harris said of watching the final series from the sideline. “Our defense, I know they was going to pull through at the end.”

Running back Graig Cooper is Miami’s newest injury concern.
Cooper missed the Hurricanes’ practice Tuesday morning with an apparent lower right leg injury. He was wearing a protective boot.
The severity was not immediately clear.
The junior has been Miami’s leading rusher in each of his first two seasons. He ran for 841 yards last year and scored touchdowns four ways — rushing, receiving, passing and returning.

UM cornerback Chavez Grant is among many accomplished athletes in his family and dreams of being the first to win a national championship in college football.
With an athletic pedigree like his, it’s not surprising Chavez Grant aspires to create his own legacy. The University of Miami cornerback’s great uncle is Jim “Mudcat” Grant, a right-handed pitcher who played from 1958 to 1971 — primarily with the Cleveland Indians and Minnesota Twins — and became the first black player in the American League to earn a win in a World Series game in 1965 against the Dodgers. His career ERA: 3.63. Grant’s uncles, Darren Hambrick and Troy Hambrick, are former NFL players who each played five seasons: Darren, a linebacker for the Cowboys, Panthers and Browns from 1998 through 2002; Troy, a running back from 2000 through 2004 for the Cowboys and Cardinals.
