After conducting his most extensive review in 15 years, Jacksonville Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver decided to stick with coach Jack Del Rio.
At least for another year.
Weaver held a half-day meeting with Del Rio on Tuesday, then said the two would continue their rebuilding project with the Jaguars.
“I believe in Jack, that’s he’s the guy,” Weaver said two days before his 75th birthday. “After going through this process, Jack is the guy that can get us there. The fans have to have enough trust in me to believe that I’m making the right decision for the franchise.”
The announcement came amid reports that Del Rio was a candidate to succeed Pete Carroll at Southern California. Carroll left USC to become the Seattle Seahawks coach. The L.A. Daily News reported Monday that Del Rio, an All-American linebacker for the Trojans in 1984, had been sent a contract to sign.
“Didn’t even talk about that,” Weaver said. “I wasn’t interested in that. I was interested in if Jack wanted to be here and was committed to this franchise and that he shared my vision and my goals for this franchise and how we go forward. That was the substance of the conversations.”

They are the drives that define quarterbacks’ careers. David Garrard defined himself with a clutch, 80-yard, game-winning drive that consumed the final five minutes of the game and left the Jets helpless to do anything more than surrender.
“David won the game. That’s what good quarterbacks do. You give them the ball and they make you pay,” coach Jack Del Rio said.
Garrard made the Jets pay in the final minutes of a half in which the Jaguars offense was largely ineffective. When the Jets scored the go-ahead touchdown with 5:04 to play and the Jaguars began their final drive at their 17-yard line, the circumstances looked favorable for the home team.
“Their pressures were getting to us. They were bringing it, plain and simple. We just had to weather the storm. It came down to that last drive. That’s why you play this game,” Garrard said.

The Jaguars’ pass defense dropped from 30th to 31st in the NFL this week.
Interestingly, the unit didn’t play because of the bye week.
“We’d better get back to work,” Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio joked. “We don’t want to fall any further.”
Humor aside, Del Rio considers the Jaguars’ struggling pass defense one of his main concerns as the club moves into Round 2 of AFC South matchups, starting Sunday at Tennessee.
The Jaguars (3-3) have allowed 365 yards or more of total offense in all but one game this season, with most of the yardage through the air. Opposing quarterbacks are completing 69.1 percent of their passes against the Jaguars (for 12 touchdowns and five interceptions) for a 99.3 passer rating and have suffered just five sacks.

Fourth-year tight end starting to play like a first-round pick
Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio had a message for tight end Marcedes Lewis at the start of the offseason.
“He said, ‘Look, man, I want you to be here [for the offseason program],’ ” Lewis said. “I want to be able to count on you. I want your teammates to know that they can count on you. Part of that is being here for them in the offseason.”
Lewis, who in the past worked out in Southern California to be close to his mother, stepfather, two brothers and sister, decided to stay in Jacksonville for the offseason program. So far, it’s paying dividends.
Lewis, now in his fourth season, might finally be the tight end the Jaguars thought they were getting when they drafted him in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft.
He had a breakout game last Sunday against Tennessee, catching four passes for 76 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown.
He ranks second in the league among tight ends with 10 or more receptions with an average of 16.3 yards per catch. Only Jermichael Finley (17.3) of Green Bay ranks higher.
Lewis is second to tight end Antonio Gates of San Diego in receptions of 25 yards or more. Lewis has three, and Gates has four.
Lewis said the work he put in during the offseason is making a difference.

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo and New York Jets linebacker Jason Trusnik have been selected as the AFC’s top players for Week 3 of the NFL season.
Jones-Drew captured the offensive honor after rushing for 119 yards and tying a career-high with three touchdowns in a 31-24 win over the Houston Texans. His 61-yard scoring run was the team’s longest play since December 23, 2007 and helped the Jaguars record a season-high 398 yards on offense.
It was Jones-Drew’s second career Player of the Week Award, having also captured the honor in Week 14 of 2006.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Reggie Hayward took a pay cut before the season and signed a new one-year contract filled with incentives.
Hayward broke his left leg Sunday at Indianapolis and will miss the rest of the season. One of five team captains, Hayward broke his fibula in a fourth-down pileup against the Colts. It was his second major injury in four years. He ruptured his Achilles’ tendon in the 2006 season opener.
“Reggie’s a big part of this team, let alone the defense,” defensive tackle Derek Landri said. “He was a captain of our team. It’s a blow, but it’s just one of those things. Another guy’s got to step in and step up and carry it on. The season’s not slowing down.

Receiver Mike Walker has endured a career’s worth of issues in just two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
He’s been plagued by a nagging knee injury, slowed by a staph infection that required hospitalization and stunned by the deaths of a close friend and his father.
Walker is ready for change. He’s already swapped jersey numbers and has plans to alter his name. He’s also healthy for the first time in years.
“I feel like where I’m at it’s do or die,” Walker said. “I have all the potential. I’m in a state of mind where it’s just time to do it. No more excuses, no more injury problems.”
