In a continued effort to strengthen its offensive line, the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday reached agreement on a one-year contract with temperamental guard Richie Incognito, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
he 26-year-old Incognito, a five-year veteran, spent his entire career with St. Louis after being drafted in the third round in 2005, but his tenure ended late last season following his second benching of the season by the Rams.
In a 40-point December loss to the Titans, Incognito drew two personal foul penalties for head-butting opponents, was benched by coach Steve Spagnuolo and watched the second half from the bench with a poncho over his head.
Incognito, who was named the dirtiest player in the NFL earlier in 2009 by The Sporting News, was later fined $50,000 by the NFL for the head butts.

The Denver Broncos and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan have agreed to part ways, and a source told ESPN.com’s John Clayton that Nolan is close to an agreement to take on the same role with the Miami Dolphins.
Before the split, Miami sent in a request for permission to interview Nolan, sources close to the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The parting was friendly and gave Nolan a chance to move on and talk to the Dolphins, the source told Clayton.
The Dolphins fired defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni and have struggled to find a quick replacement. The Dolphins’ interest in Nolan apparently opened the door for the chance for Nolan to get to Miami.
Nolan becomes the third member of coach Josh McDaniels’ inaugural staff to depart following a disappointing 8-8 finish. Offensive line coach Rick Dennison left for Houston’s staff and longtime running backs coach Bobby Turner was reunited with Mike Shanahan in Washington. Both Dennison and Turner were holdovers from the Shanahan era.

With Ronnie Brown lost for the season, the Miami Dolphins turned to their aging running back. Ricky Williams showed he’s still got it.
The 32-year-old Williams rushed for 119 yards and scored three touchdowns, and the Dolphins beat the Carolina Panthers 24-17 on Thursday night for their fourth win in six games to get into the AFC playoff picture.
A day after learning Brown is lost for the season to a foot injury, the Dolphins (5-5) continued their surge after an 0-3 start behind Williams. The 2002 NFL rushing champion had a receiving and rushing touchdown in the same game for the first time in his career that included a couple of lost seasons.
“Coach always talks about finishing,” Williams said. “Sometimes in this league, in a physical game, it’s difficult to finish. I think in the past we’ve prided ourselves on finishing games and we did a good job tonight.”

We all know Joey Porter can have a potty mouth that keeps everyone not wearing a Jets uniform entertained. But in the Sports Illustrated that hits the stands and mailboxes Wednesday, we learn Porter has a dirty reputation, also.
In a poll of 296 NFL players, Porter tied Washington’s Albert Haynesworth as the second dirtiest player in the league.
Six percent of players who responded said Porter and Haynesworth were the dirtiest. Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward, the master of the blind side block, garnered 11.6 percent of the votes to be considered the dirtiest player in the NFL.

Rex Ryan designed the Baltimore defense that caused Miami headaches twice last season. He brings the same tenacious defense to the Jets.
A rookie quarterback supported by a strong running game and a Rex Ryan-coached defense that fools you, then floors you. These Dolphins have seen this cast of characters twice before in 2008 season movies burned onto hard drives, DVDs and memories all over the Dolphins facility.
Movies in which the Dolphins were forced into the victim’s role.
Change the color scheme and the Jets resemble Baltimore, Dolphins conquerors in the regular season (27-13) and the playoffs (27-9) last year. Both games starred the Ravens defense, a unit that combined excessive talent with confounding concepts. Ryan, Baltimore’s defensive coordinator from 2005-08, brought the latter with him to the Jets.
Like the Ravens, who started quarterback Joe Flacco as a rookie last season, the Jets are led by rookie Matt Sanchez. Both are backed by strong ground games.
“They’re running all the same stuff that we saw twice last year,” Dolphins running back Patrick Cobbs said. “That’s probably the best advantage we have is that we saw it twice last year.”

The Miami Dolphins quarterback dislocated his right shoulder and may seek a second opinion to determine how long he’ll be sidelined, a person familiar with his status said Monday.
The person insisted on anonymity because the Dolphins have said little about the injury. Teammates braced for a new quarterback, with backup Chad Henne expected to make his first NFL start in Sunday’s home game against Buffalo.
Other media outlets reported Pennington had a torn capsule and was likely to miss the rest of the season.
“We don’t have a comment, because the evaluation process is still ongoing,” team spokesman Harvey Greene said.

To most current NFL players, Frank, Howard, Dandy Don and Halftime Highlights exist only as cackling reminiscences of older relatives. They are more likely to be wistful over Chris Berman on ESPN’s NFL Primetime imitating Howard Cosell’s Halftime Highlights cadence. The whole show’s become somewhat of an epilogue, subjugated in stature and treatment to the Sunday night game.
But it’s still Monday Night Football. Monday night’s Dolphins home opener against the Colts celebrates the 40th season of the football show CBS rejected because it didn’t want to move The Doris Day Show. And if a flair-filled home opener against one of the NFL’s glamour quarterbacks doesn’t put a hump in the hype curve, the Monday night stage does.
“Everybody, your peers, gets a chance to watch you play,” Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter said. “You get a chance to get on the stage and make an impact. If they forgot about you, it’s a chance to reintroduce yourself. A lot of times, we don’t get a chance to watch each other play unless you have a late game or you watch them on film. There’s nothing like showing up on a big game on Monday night.”

Ricky Williams wants to stick around the NFL just a little longer. Williams signed a one-year contract extension that could keep him with the Miami Dolphins through 2010, according to salary information posted on the NFL Players Association Web site on Tuesday. The 32-year-old running back is scheduled to earn a base salary of $3.4 million this season and $4.35 million in 2010.
Williams told The Miami Herald that he talked to Dolphins vice president of football operations Bill Parcells and worked out an agreement that was “quiet and easy” — and without an agent. Williams also hinted to The Herald that he will retire after the 2010 season.
Williams, the 1998 Heisman Trophy winner and 2002 NFL rushing champion, has rejuvenated his career in Miami and became a solid running back alongside Ronnie Brown last season. All that hardly seemed possible just five years ago, when Williams shocked the NFL by retiring from football. He also is a five-time offender of the league’s substance-abuse policy.
